The book of Joshua is a fast moving story that is full of adventure, risk, failure, hope and reward. It is a story about courage, leadership, conquest and faith. The hero of the story would appear to be Joshua as he leads God’s people into the Promised Land.
But nothing could be further from the truth! The relevance of this book is not rooted in a human hero. David Jackman argues that “Joshua himself is not the focal point of the book that bears his name, and neither is Israel. That honor belongs to God himself, who is the hero of every Old Testament narrative” (Preaching the Word Commentary 2014: 13).
According to Jackman, “The lasting relevance and helpfulness for us in our generation is to be found in [Joshua’s] instruction and challenge to us to enter into all the potential of the gospel blessings (our land of promise) secured for us by our Joshua” whom we know is Jesus (2014: 13).
Jesus is our Joshua. The gospel (and ultimately the hope of Heaven) is our Promised Land.
Our prayer for this series is that everyone who dives into it would come away
with a fresh revelation of who Jesus is and what it means to live in the reality of the hope of Heaven. Enjoy the adventure!!
